Feeks you're wrong. Ex. 39 to the Rohs directive expired on 1 July 2014. The Öko-Institut after their deliberations suggested an extension in a modified format to run to 1 July 2017. The Commissions dedicated directive suggests moving this to 20 June 2018. If the directive is defeated by the EU Parliament effectively the July 2014 default will be the de facto situation. But remember is is not a complete ban. The Rohs limits cadmium to 0.01% of the substance by weight at raw homogeneous materials level.
That video isn't new. It was the same one used on the launch of Trevista Qd's many months ago Nanosys have only licensed aspects of their technology to Samsung. It seems Samsung are able to manufacture CFQD's within the Samsung group. This is accepted by Nanoco in their recent prospectus. The environment benefits of Samsung's nano crystals are used in their publicity. Plus they have been used to support the ban in Europe with the Commission.
Samsung claim their quantum dots are cadmium free. The EU ruling won't affect them. It's unclear where Samsung are getting their CFQDs from. But as they are selling quite a few SUHD TV's they must be making quite a few of them.
Although there are no cadmium QD TV's on sale there are cadmium displays amazon fire HD tablets and aquaris mobile phones on sale in Spain. I think the exemption is likely to be extended, but the industry works much longer term than 2018, and the really big co's like Samsung and LG have gone cadmium free, which speaks volumes. What's more important is the price per kilo from Dow's production. How does it compare? People forgot that cost is the bottom line. Commissioning of the Dow factory imminent. The industry growing rapidly. Place your bets...
LG's UF9400 TV's are not yet even on sale till next November. Interesting share transactions today though. I remain a fan as they move into a huge market...
But it's not just Nano/LG who are producing cadmium free Qdots for TV's. Samsung with their SUHD range are presently selling significant numbers of TV's using their environmentally cadmium free Qdots.
