Re: Ex Dividend In the red, Travis Perkins was the worst blue-chip performer, down 6.0%, after it said its 2015 earnings are set to come in at the low end of market expectations due to continued challenges in its key markets in the third quarterThe builders' merchant and home improvement retailer said that despite planning for a reduction in repair, maintenance and improvement markets over the summer months, the actual slowdown in the market was worse than had originally been expected.Despite continuing to outperform a weak UK market, the tougher-than-expected conditions mean the group now anticipates its full-year 2015 earnings before interest and taxation will be at the low end of market expectations.Fellow building-products company SIG ended as the biggest decliner in the FTSE 250, down 21%. It said its sales performance had diverged in the first nine months between its UK and European operations and said continued weakness in the latter, plus some softness in the UK repair, maintenance and improvement market, mean it now expects its underlying pretax profit to fall year-on-year.SIG said it now expects its underlying pretax profit for the year to the end of December to be GBP85 million to GBP90 million, compared to GBP98.1 million in 2014. The underlying figures strip out any exceptional items and the effects of acquisitions and disposals.Other building materials companies were hit by the comments by their two peers. Kingfisher ended down 3.7%, Wolseley down 2.3%, Grafton Group down 4.2%, and Howden Joinery Group down 5.5%. SEE:[link]

shares buy Courtesy of alliance trustHargreaves a winter warmerWinter chill could provide coal boostWilliam CainWeather watchers should stick coal merchant Hargreaves Services (HSP:AIM) on their watchlist ahead of an El Nino-induced deep freeze which risks household energy black-outs. The forecast winter chill has prompted Prime Minister David Cameron to hold talks with cabinet colleagues to discuss Britain’s flagging energy capacity. Energy transmission operator National Grid (NG.) says peak energy supply will be 1.2% higher than peak demand this winter, its lowest level in a decade. Weak commodity markets and the closure of coal-powered stations in the past 12 months have hit investor sentiment towards the coal industry and suppliers like Hargreaves. But coal continues to enjoy a cost advantage over gas, according to National Grid’s 2015/16 outlook, albeit a narrower one than last year. ‘Forward prices for winter 2015/16 continue to favour coal burn over lower to average efficiency gas plants for power generation,’ the report says. Troubled Hargreaves certainly needs a break after a miserable 2015 which saw profitability plummet and management switch to cash conservation mode. Closure of the Redcar Steelworks will also impact profitability. The potential for windfall profits at the unloved support services business if Britain faces an Arctic blast is offset to an extent by a large inventory build-up among coal powered facilities after a mild winter in 2014. Shares says: Buy "This is highly speculative call at 322.75p. Hargreaves trades at two-thirds of its last reported tangible book value, albeit there are risks of write downs.

Re: Has Giles Elliot found ... Well, there does seem to have been a spate of (Chinese) firms listing on AIM that have simply fabricated accounts..... and then that have gone to certain lengths to cover the deception up (one of them, I forget which one, saw its British directors fly to China to view bank details of claimed cash deposits). Eventually it all comes crashing down. It is wrecking the market's credibility and is sad for the genuine China plays out there - such as Hutchinson China or West China Cement (now listen only in Hong Kong). It certainly wants looking into but I am starting to agree with OG - you take a bet on such a risky stock there is not that much sympathy in the world to go round. People are dying in Syria who I could care about instead. Why not buy a professional trust that invests in AIM: Miton microcap for instance? I didn't see them investing here - o-: Good luck with genuine investments..... this never was one of those.
