Re: weir Just where is that bid circulated last week? Sell on rumour buy on fact! I am still waiting for sub 400p then I will join the party with Weir! I think it´s obvious that there will not be a bid here, you just have to use common sense & not let greed cloud your judgement!
weir Does anyone know what has happened to the potential £25 per share bid or was that just a classic case of media reporting for reporting sakes ?
US rig count "SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- Baker Hughes BHI, -1.71% on Friday reported that the number of U.S. rigs actively drilling for oil and natural gas as of March 13 fell 67 rigs to 1,125. The rig count is down 684 from the same time last year. The number of oil rigs fell 56 to 866. April oil CLJ5, -4.29% was last at $45.26, down $1.79, or 3.8%. It was trading around $45.18 before the data."No comment, grub ready.
Re: The probability of a profits warning... Many argue that this was what 911 was really about supply issues in the Middle East, as well as gateway wars. Neither Russia nor Saudi had the ability to produce more than 10bn barrels a day so they needed to get back Iraqi oil & possibly Iranian oil production. Both Russian/Saudi wells are well over 50 years old, technically they should be going into sharp decline any time soon if they haven´t already. Rumours have it the Saudi already pours large amounts of sea water into their oil fields. No one really knows apart from the Americans & Saudi´s high command the true state of oil supplies.
Re: The probability of a profits warning? Current Saudi output is c10mn. bpd I think, which is at the top end of their capability - when I worked in Saudi some 30 years ago ouptput spiked at about 8 or 9mn. I believe, then dropped sharply during the 80s recession at which point Saudi infrastructure projects were cancelled.I'm guessing that some of the infrastructure at these high levels of production might be a bit creaky and need maintenance/replacement if they go on pumping it out like this, which should be good for companies like Weir I'd have thought?I think even at 10mn. bpd they have enough crude to last well over a century (no doubt someone will correct me) so I wouldn't be factoring this into share price predictions any time soon. And it's the cheapest crude in the world to extract - the local price at the pumps when I lived there back in the 80s was 10p a gallon and they weren't losing money.
Re: The probability of a profits warning... The UK is so desperate now that it has to include prostitutes/"adult services" & illegal drug sales for GDP growth. There have been many people questioning these figures which look grossly over estimated. Some estimates put UK illegal drug use at 1/4 of every man/woman/child in the UK, clearly that would be highly dubious. As I have stated on the TW board, these boards are filled with investor complacency. Some how people see these markets as a true gauge of economic health. I think it is the old cliché especially for us bears that markets can behave irrational far longer than "investors" can remain solvent. The rational will come back. The collapsing against the GBP, Jesus Christ, current account deficits/personal debt/corporate debt the UK is no better than France/Spain et al!
Re: The probability of a profits warning... Ask Cairn Energy about India.
Re: The probability of a profits warning? "Are its aggressors going to fancy an aggressive take over in such an uncertain environment?"Well that's how I see it, too - adding-in the problems facing the mining industry. China's growth prospects are being scaled down; although any 'growth' is good news. Note to self: check out India's prospects.
Re: The probability of a profits warning? Harold,When you start calling the gold price correctly I shall start paying some heed to what you say about Weir."If they [Saudi] keep pumping massive amounts of sea water for too long this is going to do their oil fields much harm."That salt watter isnae gonnae do their Weir pumps much good either ... they'll have tae buy new yins. That'll have tae be guid for Weir.LKH on the flybridge keeping the faith with Weir
The probability of a profits warning? I would have thought the chances of Weir issuing a profits warning over the next 6-12 months must be 50/50. If Weir´s business is made up of 50% hydrocarbons, this is still quite a sizeable area. Over the last 8 months, when the oil price starting its descent, nearly 130,000 jobs have been lost. I would have thought that just going on this fundamental alone makes a bid for Weir, highly unlikely. Are its aggressors going to fancy an aggressive take over in such an uncertain environment? I would take these prices an exit, Weir is in extreme bubble territory. Way, way out on the mean, which is probably around 300p-500p. Does the share price at present take into account the real world & the woes it faces? Probably not.The risk/reward must be taken into consideration, it looks a very risky stock if Saudi is serious at keeping these prices for some considerable time. But how mature are Saudi fields? If they keep pumping massive amounts of sea water for too long this is going to do their oil fields much harm.
Fly, my pretties, fly! Perhaps the takeover rumours DO have legs .....LKH on the flybridge never get out of the boat
