Are we starting a fire? For Sport DirectYes the fire rises[link]
20th July - FY Results A guest appearance off me. I don't make that many these days as I don't need to thanks to SXX, AMC and a few others where I've been bold enough to back the downside then the upsides and vice versa.FY Results up for SPD on the 20th July. Maybe not so great is the vibes.A Forsey like individual I think is required again at the helm, along with a good Finance Director.A corporate jet with profits faltering was a step in the wrong direction for me although I did well out of Newcastle winning promotion back to the Premiership and the matches that got them there.Imvho and please dyorTakeno
Re: Game Group Similar customer profile. It will be explained as a "cross selling" opportunity.DL
Re: Game Group Novel idea, cinemas seem to make a fortune from icons such as Minions when selling sweets, drinks and merchandise, so perhaps there is method in your madness!
Re: Game Group Could it be that Mike Ashley has a clever idea. I know Game only sell computer games but is there a chance that the characters in computer games could become emblazoned with sportswear adverts? Like footballers are now?
Game Group Mike Ashley has just paid 25p per share for a comapnay with equity of 75 p per share, is this purchase good or bad?My first thought was this was done for an investmet in their property portfolio, but according to the Game annual report there property portfolio was sold of for £7.1 million and then leased back.So why invest in a Game, not Sports Direct main product focus, only that it is a 'cheap purchase', companies are normally so cheap for a reason!Perhaps he sees a turnaround strategy with a Sports Direct business model but for the gaming industry, I cant see trainers and computer games sold on the same properties as one doesn't go with the other but I am intrigued behind the business decision.Any Thoughts?

Recent News Of all the recent news it was the IPO comments that caught my eye;He didn't think the Sports Direct stock market float was a success"The IPO was an unmitigated disaster," he told the court. The 2007 stock market debut, which saw Mr Ashley raise over £900m, happened because it was the best thing for the business, he said. It wasn't necessary for him to sell shares to raise money. "I was already fabulously wealthy. What do you think I did with the money? Went out and bought the neighbour's house? I already owned it!" The shares fell from £3 to less than 35p following the company's stock market launch, as investors became worried about Mr Ashley's unconventional management practices - including the time he played a game of "spoof" with the investment bankers who had organised the float.- just a reminder of how important sentiment is. £3 > 35pAs ever, I get interested under 280.But, then I don't mind the occasional game of "spoof".DL

Re: Share Buy Back Just some thoughts - agree that share buyback could be the ultimate way to take private. There will be some big player shareholders that will have a say in it assuming they don't get cold feet. A couple of points re trading outlook- what proportion of SPD's sales are to children: these would be relatively inelastic in tough times. Sports Direct are at the lower end of the market - this should weather any recessionuncertainty fairly well. Re hedging - you can only really hedge for so long. eg if SPD's import costs are circa now 20% higher then if it puts its prices up by 20% how much market share does it actually lose ? Eventually the whole market has to move anyway. More questions than answers I know but my view is that SPD's trading will remain relatively strong in the medium term.
Newcastle takeover? Theres a rumour doing the rounds that a Chinese consortium may be about to bid for Newcastle United. If true and this happens it should be good for the sp as super Mike Ashley will have more money to invest and pay divs to SPD shareholders...............away the lads!
Re: Share Buy Back If they remove them form the share list permanently, then EPS increases, and probably most importantly, Mike Ashley's share of the business increases. More of the conspiracty that he would like to take it private and this is a way to do it on the cheap. The shares bought back represent around 16% of the original total if they are added back in - if you see what I mean! Meanwhile the share price continues to flal on profit and PR grounds, and if there are political issues here soon which hits th £ again, then assuming that he continues not to hedge, that will increase SPD's cost base again sellng into a market with less money in their pockets (the UK predominantly). Admittedly, in this situation consumers may be tempted to trade down to SPD's lebel but a more likely scenario is that the market becomes more ceompetitive and profits become even garder to come by. Thoughts anyone? I dont hold anymore and so with the scenario I am painting I wold have to call these a weak sell still.
Re: Keep it in the family/copy that [link]
Keep it in the family/copy that Just got back from my latest Thai trip, very interesting.Still seeing more and more SPD clobber walking up and down Soi Bakoaw,Soi Diana,2nd Road,Beach Road etc.One night I sat outside Walking st (refuse to go down there seeing as they removed a picture of the beloved king some years back) anyways, theres always a T-shirt cart opposite the bar complex and would you believe it? Only got a black Lonsdale T-shirt there for 200 Baht. Now I know this is a copy, cause that's all they sell, but amazed now the Thais are in on SPD,they don`t copy things that don`t sell.Immitation is the best form of flattery. To my Thai friends.........CHAI YO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Re: Share Buy Back Thanks for the info NoQuestionMarks! So if my maths is correct, Sports Direct will have, eventually purchased over 20 % of the total shares available after these several buy-back events. Is this as good thing?
