Re: Results Hmm, how come I missed this beauty. No debt; no pension black hole; strongly cash generative - that'll do nicely.Bought some at 1636 ish.
Results More good news from one of my favourite stocks. The sp has fallen because the high street did not confirm any sales growth but it has long been the case that profits matter more than volume and the margins have improved further and with a good outlook. The travel business continues to blossom and another rise in the dividend. A very well managed company imho.
NEW ARTICLE: A stock in one chart "LSE:SMWH:WH Smith has been a star performer - doubling in price over the last three years. Over the last decade it has improved its return on capital from a poor number to a respectable one. But, as you can see, for the last ten years returns ..."[link]
Not so boring I always regarded WH Smith business a bit dull and never felt desire to buy shares in them.On 25 Jan SMWH showed up as a gold cross (shorter moving average, MA, rising up through longer rising MA) which is regarded as a buy signal by some investors. I looked into fundamentals some of which look good.Div v time chart show dividends increasing every year since start in 2005PE 20.9 so shares look a bit pricey.Yield 2.16% so below averageFCF div cover 2.26 so well coveredROCE 85.4% pa very goodBroker consensus Strong Hold so perhaps not a buySP over 2 years +76.5% FTSE mid 250 +3%Trend +31.55% paSP over 1 year 38.4% FTSE 250 -3%Trend +35.44% paThose are quite exciting SP rises and look consistent.May buy some as they look like a reasonably safe capital growth company with consistent modest dividend stream. Must be well managed.

We heard this week that the recent boom in "colour therapy" has underpinned the first like-for-like sales growth in LSE:SMWH:WH Smith's chain of high street newsagents this century. ..."[link]
Great update and great resilience Virtually only company to show a rise in the current market bloodbath and despite feeble comment in FT to-day, proves itself to be very well managed and progressive company. Well done.
NEW ARTICLE: WH Smith: Local hero "WH Smith, is perhaps, an unlikely stockmarket hero. Fact is though, over the last ten years the fusty old brandâs financial performance has been heroic.I expected not to warm to WH Smith but having read itâs full-year results to 31 August ..."[link]
Excellent results Very good results to-day and faith justified -wish I had more.
Deceptively good company Because it sells a miscellaneous collection of low value items, I think that many people do not appreciate what an excellent company SMWH actually is. In its own way, it is another Costa Coffee and look at the Whitbread performance.. It sells what people need and it sells to a partially captive group of purchasers in motorways, airports, train stations and also of course in the high street. Well managed and growing, it is an attractive investmentimho.
NEW ARTICLE: Upgrades support Smith's premium valuation "Setting the scene for October's full-year results, LSE:SMWH:WH Smith's has released another brief but positive update, signalling that it's going to beat expectations. NEW ARTICLE: WH Smith at record levels "Late last year we asked whether LSE:SMWH:WH Smith was worth buying into. The answer was a resounding "yes". And investors who took that cue would have been quids in. The share price bounced off technical support at 1,000p and has kept on going, ..."[link]
