Investor revolt at miner Petra Diamonds The head of London’s largest listed diamond miner faces a bruising showdown with investors at the annual meeting on Friday. Investor advisory group Pirc has recommended a vote against the re-election of Adonis Pouroulis, 48, as non-executive chairman at Petra Diamonds. It says he is not independent enough, as he founded Petra and also held executive roles until 2011. Last year, nearly 20% of votes were cast against Pouroulis’s re-election. Based in Jersey, Petra Diamonds owns and runs some of the largest mines in South Africa, having snapped them up from De Beers. It listed on AIM in 1997 before moving to the main market in 2011. It is worth about £360m. Shares have fallen from about 73p at the start of the year to 41.2p on Friday — the slide accelerating in June after it tapped shareholders for $170m (£132.5m) in a rights issue to pay down debt. Chief executive Johan Dippenaar is planning to step down once a successor is found. Shareholder adviser group ISS has also raised concerns about Pouroulis’s appointment, but is nonetheless backing his re-election. It is not worried about his independence but says he may have too many other jobs. Pouroulis is also on the board of AIM-listed Chariot Oil and Gas, chairman of LSE-listed Rainbow Rare Earths and recently became chairman of Toronto-listed Desert Lion Energy.
