SHORTS DATA hxxp://shorttracker.co.uk/company/GB0031274896/allBetting Against U.K. Retailers Hits 2-Year High Amid Brexit Jitters06/04/2017 12:45pmDow Jones NewsMarks & Spencer (LSE:MKS)Intraday Stock ChartToday : Friday 7 April 2017Philip WallerLONDON--Betting against U.K. retail stocks has hit a two-year high as investors fret about the potential impact on the sector of a "hard Brexit", a study released Thursday showed.Grocers including Ocado Group PLC (OCDO.LN), Wm Morrison Supermarkets PLC (MRW.LN) and J Sainsbury PLC (SBRY.LN) hold the top three places respectively in a list of the most-heavily shorted stocks in the sector compiled by research group IHS Markit.Marks & Spencer Group PLC (MKS.LN), Halfords Group PLC (HFD.LN), Sports Direct International PLC (SPD.LN) and Pets at Home Group PLC (PETS.LN) have also been targets of short-selling, in which investors bet on a downward movement in shares by borrowing and selling them in the hope of buying them back at a profit later.Online grocer Ocado is also the third most-shorted stock in the FTSE350 Index as a whole, with more than 15% of its shares out on loan.Investors keen to hedge against uncertainty caused by the U.K.'s vote to leave the EU have been shorting UK stocks with a heavy domestic revenue profile since the middle of last year, IHS Markit said.Shorting of retailers, many of which get most or all of their earnings from the U.K. market, has surged in the last few weeks as Britain has triggered Article 50, the EU's mechanism by which an existing member leaves the bloc. The bets now represent 3.3% of the total shares of the 43 retailers in IHS Markit's study, the highest average for the sector in more than two years.IHS Markit analyst Simon Colvin said a growing number of disputes related to the U.K.'s EU exit, such as last week's row over the sovereignty of British overseas territory Gibraltar, risks a so-called "hard Brexit", in which the U.K. would quit the EU without a trade deal after the official two-year negotiating period."Such an outcome could leave retailers paying more for imported goods, owing to both tariffs and a falling pound, while potentially limiting their access to the foreign staff who play an important role in the U.K.'s service industry," Mr Colvin said. While supermarkets have been shorted for a while due to competition from discounters, more bearish sentiment towards clothing and sport goods retailers in the last few weeks indicates the market is steeling itself for a slowdown in non-essential spending, he added.Short interest in M&S has more than doubled in the year to date to 9% of shares outstanding, while shorting of Sports Direct and Pets at Home has climbed by more than a third since the start of the year.Write to Philip Waller at [email protected](END) Dow Jones NewswiresApril 06, 2017 07:30 ET (11:30 GMT)Copyright (c) 2017 Dow Jones & Company, Inc.Please do your own research.

What is happening to OCDO shares of late: rapid upswing and then a gradual drip, drip, drip down. When is the Reservoir going to refill?

Re: there's a light on the horizon "You can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear " comes to mind!!!

valeite 31 Jan 2017

there's a light on the horizon what have we learned.......well we've proved there is demand out there for what we do but we're not making much from it....hence the shares are moribund .but we do have a new CEO for our Ocado Smart Platform and he's the very capable Luke Jensen .something tells me we edging forward to a deal

Genemachine 20 Jan 2017

Taegets missed!!! Well 10 days before Full Year Results and despite discussions with a number of partners "multiple deals in multiple countries" has failed to materialise. One has to question every word from this management team, zero out of ten for aim and credibility in tatters....who knows where they go from here!!

Re: Lord Rose quote! it's a meaningless statement - he can hardly say something different. I have several shares underwater since Brexit (not saying Brexit is the case of OCDO's woes), but I'm happy with my decisions and will wait for them to come back as I believe they will. This one is off my portfolio the minute I get close to what I paid. No faith left.

Lord Rose quote! On the appointment of Emma Lloyd as Non-Exec. he states she is joining "at an exciting time in Ocado's development ".Perhaps at some time he can share some of his excitement with the shareholders or maybe he just likes the look of her!!

Re: Collaborations So all in all Genemachine I still take a different view to you and think collaborations are more likely than not. jJust managing to stop myself saying "collaberations soon", however I have to buy out the lady wifes car llease for around 20K in April next, and the cash is in Ocado along with a fair bit more. So if no collaberations by then I'm well bug***ed, to use the vernacular.

Re: Empire Strikes Back Coincidentally I posted re. Ocado/M&S on the LSE website last Wednesday 9th, and copy it below.I agree Yelsmek that an M & S deal could be well up the list of options. We hear that they are to refocus towards food as a priority and increase store capacity in that respect. But as they will be only too aware they are not multi channel. In house delivery systems may be poor at Waitrose, but at M & S they are non existent.I expect there are many of us who use M & S food halls as as and when we visit the clothing store but not as a destination in their own right. Except at Xmas. Then we troop along in our thousands to collect our pre ordered Xmas fare. 2017 sees the opportunity of a break clause in the Waitrose agreement, and this could be a positive for Ocado in two respects. On the one hand the Ocado option could be a godsend to M & S, as it catapults them straight into near UK national online distribution, and of course they have a store full of other products for internet ordering and van delivery which at present are subbed out to courier services. Waitrose could not possibly cope with servicing the majority of their existing online customers currently on the Ocado network via their own in house systems, so a good proportion of those existing customers may well be prepared to migrate to M & S via Ocado, in order to still enjoy a quality product efficiently delivered. In the above scenario every one wins hands down, except Waitrose.Alternatively Waitrose see the danger looming and act swiftly to strengthen their ties with Ocado again. Also win win.Meanwhile Amazon decides how serious they are about UK grocery disruption, and whether or not to plough their own furrow. The other majors scratch their heads and wonder what to do next, and Morrisons grins like a Cheshire cat, having already made the the integration with Ocado, which M & S should now emulate. All of the above in prospect and we haven't even left UK shores yet.Interesting times.P.S. pure coincidence the lady wife has just appeared and wants me to hurry up as she wishes to place the M & S Xmas order.

Re: Collaborations [link] Genemachine - have a look at the link attached while I read your M&S post and get myself sorted.

Genemachine 16 Nov 2016

Collaborations There is a big difference between Amazon Prime and Ocado......Amazon deliver and expand collaborations whereas Ocado talk about targeting "multiple deals in multiple geographies" but in 10 months have failed to hit any targets or deliver any collaborations. This management team seem incapable of anything other than cheap spin ....their web page still has an interview with their CEO which is now so out dated that it is indicative of no innovation/lateral thinking/deals since that time.

Empire Strikes Back Have a look at my post on the M&S website under this heading.......does it ring a chord and what do others think?
