Getting Silly Hope Archie is busy. There was a one off charge last year pretty sure there won't be this year.3% on internet will hurt amazon a little perhaps 25% might have done the trick, just a start though isn't it

Timing of Sales The up to 50% sale is on -is it a piece of clever marketing, timed ahead of Easter and aimed at clearing unpopular sized clothing/products

Re: M&S Internet sales [link] will the draft levy 3% create a level playing field with High Street retailers and what about reducing business rates?

M&S Internet sales [link] is ahead of Inditex in terms of % of sales via Internet but lags Next. The thing I find puzzling is why M&S with all its clever retailers struggles to narrow the performance gap on say Inditex or Next? The store portfolio need to match customers' needs and if it is satisfied through Asos-style set-up so be it.

Re: My update Lupo, c'est la vie Bottom line , JL have taken £290 out of my wallet and MKS have lightened your wife's by £35

Marathon maybe but it started years before Rowe [link] the guard every few years may kick the can down the road but M&S must focus on a step change ie, mergers.

Car parking charges/stealth congestion charges Local Government is set to hike car parking charges on squeezed consumers, some councils appear to be adding a stealth congestion charge on the parking charge as well. Why should established retailers stay on the High Street when Government policy is to over tax consumers/retailers, better to switch to cheaper locations and push Internet sales.

Re: Oh dear ... Just noticed the mention of Superdry. Initially, I thought that it must be a feminine hygiene brand, but after some investigation I determined that it was sports gear.I'm amazed at how popular it appears to be, but I've got to say that the gear doesn't live up to the hype of their "products combining vintage Americana styling with Japanese inspired graphics", at least, they don't inspire me, and seem very ordinary.I'm reluctant to say that they're just a flash in the pan before being displaced by the next good thing, but...

Re: My update philanderer - " Picked one up further along oxford street at John Lewis."That reminds me. Last Monday, the wife went to JL at Sloane Square to get a black dress but couldn't find anything suitable. The only possible dress was from a label costing some £350. Carried on down Kings Road and picked one up at M&S for £35. Close shave, m8s, lol.

Re: Oh dear ... Hi CT - Well we are getting there .Is it worth hanging on for those extra 25 pennies?Brokers note out says 330p and I think that's fair right now.We are still over 6% plus a few perks.I am very happy buying anything with a 2 at the front?

Re: must say I've thought for many years that a MKS/Sbury tie up would make sensein terms of logistics and economy of scale. My wife put £3K into what was thena single company PEP with MKS some 30 years or so ago and despite all dividendsbeing re-invested its still in the red!

If the budget falls short of creating a level playing field then institutional shareholders of M&S should lobby for a merger with another High Street chain, say, Sainsbury. In merging it would create more opportunities to create value - stronger together than as a separate identities. Why wait for a GKN- like takeover, a ten year turnaround at M&S is too long, is it better to opt for a merger to create a new stronger business focused on customers and shareholders?

Re: UK Budget needs to create a fair playing... Singapore is going to introduce an on line sales tax.Our dozy so and so's wont bother until the high street has gone with all the revenue it brings. You never know though!

stutes 09 Mar 2018

UK Budget needs to create a fair playing field Tuesday's UK Budget needs to focus, in part, on cutting business rates for High Street retailers and to create a fairer playing field between brick/block retailers and tech retailers. If the likes of say Amazon can pay a small UK tax bill then the same standards should apply to High Street retailers.
