Electric Vehicles [link] don't imagine the environment will benefit, since most of the generated power is lost by the time it reaches the car battery.Games
Re: Anyone there? Catalytc convertors are used in all kinds of diesel engines and use a filter to capture soot and convert to CO2 using precious metal technology. The low Sulphur diesel we now find in our forecourts in EU is legislated to contain less than 10 ppm. Non- desulphurised diesel (found in marine and less developed economies) use diesels from anywhere between 1000 to 35,000 ppm. It is Sulphur that generates the soot - so the higher the Sulphur content the higher the soot level. I suppose the real threat and concern is e-cars, not so much the switch away from diesel to gasoline which is likely to be the short term trend. Longer term you can envisage e-cars and the phasing out of hydrocarbon fuels. As mentioned below, my beef with this company is its inability to successfully develop and commercialise new technologies from it's heavy R&D spend. There's also too many bean counters in senior positions looking at the here and now, and not the road ahead. JM aspires to be a science driven corporation but in reality this is just a vision and not a journey.
Re: Anyone there? "Wondering what impact the diesel situation will have on this business going forward, now that the first shot has been fired by the little guy in London and Stuttgart have announced they won't be building anymore diesel cars from 20xx."I too have been wondering about diesel situation. I understand that catalytic converters cannot be fitted to diesel cars to remove nitrogen dioxides as the carbon particulates would block their action. With car manufactures cutting back on diesel car production and more restrictions for their use in cities due to the higher pollution they create compared with petrol, will this swing sales of petrol cars up and diesel down? If so this should be good for JMAT as they make most of their profits from selling catalytic converters.Have been considering selling my JMAT shares for several months now due to their under performance and modest dividend. It would also raise cash for the next tax year ISA subscription as hold in my dealing account.
Re: Anyone there? "Looks as if my switcheroo from JMAT to Shell was a stroke of pure genius"what do you think of this as an opportunity :-[link] on from all of the above, the target was cut from 475p to 455p but the recommendation was kept at 'Underperform'."""Underperform?, the stock is at 333perhaps it should read "back up the truck"Games --Terry Smith wrote in his last article that he regretted dumping the stock and still believed DOM was a good company.
Re: Anyone there? LK -- I reduced my holding also to 2.43% and invested some in Anpario and considering the rest now -- I'm out of oil, I don't have your knowledge of the why's and whatsits of the black stuff and I have no idea if it's worth $30 a barrel or $100 a barrel.I'm trying to stick to non commoditised companies where possible with the exception of residual 2.4% of my wad split between RIO-BHP-GLEN.Games -- knowledge is a wonderful thing -- a little knowledge is very dangerous, especially in my case lol!!.

Re: Anyone there? Games,"I remain comfortable with JMAT being sat at number eight of my Top of the Pops at 4.6% of the shrunken wad"Well, that was the day before yesterday. Following the news of Shell's excellent sale of its Canadian oil sands biznay I've decided to big up on Shell and cut back on JMAT. The latter is now down to number 20 on the Top of the Pops at 1.8% of the wad.LKH on the flybridge
Re: Anyone there? Games,"Wondering what impact the diesel situation will have on this business going forward"Is the sp not perhaps being overly spooked by all the talk about diesel being history? The latest trading report talked about increasingly sophisticated means of getting NOx out of light diesels (seems like a good idea). I can't see heavy diesel engines being replaced by battery powered engines any time soon ... and if there is something of a switch to gasoline, well, JMAT make systems for petrol as well innit? The inevitable gradual switch to EVs or fuel cell vehicles will, I suppose, take its toll on JMAT but this is not new news so must be in the price already. They do have perhaps a slightly greater proportion of their biznay dependent on vehicle ECT than one might like but, all in all, I remain comfortable with JMAT being sat at number eight of my Top of the Pops at 4.6% of the shrunken wad.LKH on the flybridge
Re: Anyone there? to add to that -- ECT is still 61% of JMAT's group business.Games
Re: Anyone there? Curious - as there is no dialogue of late.Wondering what impact the diesel situation will have on this business going forward, now that the first shot has been fired by the little guy in London and Stuttgart have announced they won't be building anymore diesel cars from 20xx.I see the battery materials supply business grew about 11% last time but the battery business itself didn't do a great deal.Just a bit concerned we could be looking at a gaping hole in the business here at some point. However realistically fuel inefficient electric cars are, when taking account of the enormous upstream-downstream power loss to the battery, they are gaining ground on city emissions and on the growing scare of the many particulates in the air from diesel, despite the lower CO2 ratings. The share price has drifted back toward 3000 - maybe this is the reason.Games

Re: Scrappage scheme O/T - why do these environmental campaigns attack motorists when they're already using diesel legislated to contain Sulphur at 10ppm whereas the shipping industry is allowed to use "bunker" diesel that contains 100x that amount. The marine industry is a major polluter. I suppose the marine industry is a good sign for JMAT.
Scrappage scheme [link] do apologise upfront for even glancing at the Daily Express, which I occasionally admit to.I thought this article was worth sharing, on the scrappage scheme proposed, or supposedly to be proposed at the next budget. This I guess is more negative sentiment to diesel, JMAT's biggest earner market. Is this the signal to say good bye here, or will the scrappage scheme fail and everyone hang on to their old bangers?Economically these schemes are a con, given that people get some kind of notional discount, but only against the list price of a new car that no one pays anyway -- but it's the sentiment change we should might worry about, no?Games - This is only the UK - at the moment.
