SP uptick most likely coming from the Numis upgrade:''Hill & Smith shares have drifted over recent months. Indeed the performance has diverged from other 'Trump stocks' since the Presidential election; H&S +9.5%, Ashtead +33%, Vesuvius +34% and the Engineering sector +18%. The PE rating (17x 2017) is now a discount to the sector, if high by historic levels. With Brexit also looking less of an issue and currency benefits we see upside risk to numbers (with further potential from bolt-ons as usual). A 5% upgrade to numbers and sector PE of 18x suggests 1280p target price and hence we put the shares back on a positive rating (Add from Hold).UK. Post Brexit we took a slightly cautious view on the UK business, in particular the housing related activities. The group’s Birtley subdivision of businesses manufacture doors, lintels, plasterers accessories and associated building metalwork structures and is highly exposed to the housing sector. The business has sales of c. £40m with margins close to 10%. The predicted fall off in housing starts post Brexit is now replaced by more positive expectations for 5% growth suggesting the business should now make positive progress in 2017.North America. The US business performed well in 2016 assisted by the second full year from the new Memphis galvanizing plant. Obama’s five year $305bn highways bill was passed in 2015 but the spending benefits only started to come through in H2 2016 suggesting that there is more to come for H&S from this avenue even before Trump’s infrastructure splurge is enacted. At present we have broadly flat underlying numbers for galvanizing assuming some UK softness offsetting US growth and French recovery. If the UK continues as expected and additional US infrastructure comes through this could prove a touch conservative. In addition the Zoneguard temporary road barrier business appears to be gaining traction at just the right time.''Full year results are out in Marchglta SG

Re: Prez Trump effect Hill and Smith are the third largest holding in my portfolio, powering ahead after yesterday's election results - the reason is Trump's acceptance speech outlining the investment he wishes to make in US infrastructure. No arguments from me, especially as my second largest holding is in Ashtead and equal top are Halma and Melrose - all heavily involved and intrinsically dependant on US infrastructure, its development and investment.

Prez Trump effect SP up 16% in less than two days.Did Trump say he was going to build that Mexican wall out of motorway crash barriers? )J

Re: Sp On long term trend 1200p was from exuberant buying in referendum rebound and good H1 results, so some pullback to be expected.Dividend growth has been 13.8% and they have good forward orders to sustain this. (see H1 presentation)Having spent many hours on the M1 & M6 in the upgrade sections (often stationary!) I've had plenty chance to admire the miles of variogard barriers - just galvanised grey, no blue glow! Theres also the gantries with the speed cameras especially through Brum - HILS home territory.Perhaps the institutions are wary of current debt levels and gov't commitment to Highway England projects which are factored into current SP. Recent acquisitions should also assist future bids.International orders also likely to translate to greater profit with currency tailwinds (ie weak pound) Slow & steady solid company to hold for long term imhoLast year there was a Q3 trading update in mid November, hopefully to be repeated this yearSGSG

Sp Bit disappointed with the recent fall.Would have thought likely increase in infrastructure spending would have helped support the sp. There will also be a boost from the overseas operations following that vote.Maybe the sp had got a little ahead of itself.May top up if it goes sub 1000p.Mm.

Good three years In August 2013 I commented (Interim's 06/08/13) that I had topped up my holding and this generated a flurry of similar comments.I trust everyone who bought then is still holding and now has a grin that would put the Cheshire Cat to shame.£10.45 Woo Hoo!J

"We believe the market has overreacted to Hill & Smith’s exposure to the UK, which provided 47% of operating profits in 2015. This is protected by committed spending on roads and infrastructure projects. At the same time, US profits, which accounted for 45% of 2015 profits, will benefit substantially from translation into sterling, should the current pressure on the cable continue." frm a Panmure broker note out this morning on research tree

Re: Yeehaaaaa!! II don't understand the gyrations in share price. Unless the £10.00 was over the top, there is no obvious reason for a semi collapse to <£9.00.May have to add post Brexit vote (whatever happens).Mm.
