Greggs is one of the Retail Winners The consumer is very much alive and well. Clothing is the odd one out but people still look at fashion and want to touch the garments, even if they do not buy as much of it as before on the High Street. The retail consumer is in established 'bargain hunter' mode. Greggs have held their meal deal levels for another year.National Living Wage impact is likely to be more keenly felt amongst Greggs competitors. Investment in productivity and efficiency is the key for retailers in balancing the equation and Greggs is ahead of the game in this respect. Profit per employee is on a rising trend and in 2015 was up 80 per cent on 2013.Greggs are now aiming to have significantly more than 2,000 units in due course which is a major escalation of future openings.Trading update due on 09 May when I expect the good news delivered at the preliminary results on 01 March to be reinforced.

Re: Good Prelims just around the corner 5% LFL - more like 10% after the amount of celebration pasties I have scoffed this lunchtime.

Re: Good Prelims just around the corner Well I hate to say it again but I told you so, and what a reaction so far today - it's that stupendous word again.

Good Prelims just around the corner The Prelims on 1 March will be good - you heard it here first. The general market sell off will be put in the shade by a short period of something close to mild euphoria, with confirmation that Greggs model is well and truely not broken or even injured. What may have looked like a poor fourth quarter, will on a two year view looking backwards merely appear as the smoothing out of a stupendous fourth quarter of 2014. Overall on that two year view like for like sales were roughly up 10 per cent.I am predicting, on the cautious side, just shy of 4 per cent LFL growth will have been achieved during the first two months of 2016. On the less cautious side I hope this outcome will be closer to 5 per cent. The strong buy is for the long term as ever.

Operating Leases Not a shareholder in Gregg's, but for those who are, they may want to run their eye over the 2100 leases that Gregg's carries and the impact if they were to appear on the balance sheet, which they don't.Worth reading this article, Greggs is referenced, to determine the risk element better in Gregg;s finances :-[link]

Re: Why the drop? Link to Guardian[link] It did amazingly well last year, up 80% according to the article. It is a good company, but that does not mean its SP will keep growing. It's P/E is still high which means investors expect above average growth from a company. If that growth stalls, the SP will plummet as has been seen today. The MACD momentum also looks bad with strong downtrend It looks as if it might be heading for a death cross in the charts which is bad.Needs an eye kept on it[link]

Reaction to trading update I agree with previous comments - a profitable, well managed company providing a basic service I.e. food and drink. It's developed a high street formula which works and apart from satisfying the super optimists the trading statement confirms a solid performance for the year. The reaction appears to be an over reaction and I am comfortable to stay with my holding and wait for the results in March and the accompanying dividend announcement. Rhiw 12/1/16

Re: Why the drop? I think the markets are so used to the company issuing trading updates to the effect that they will beat previous forecasts that when they "only" say that they are trading in line with expectations, it is seen as a negative. Thus Greggs becomes the victim of its own success!I think I am right in saying that the company was the best performer in the FTSE 250 in 2014 and was in the top 5 last year too.So plenty of profits available and clearly some are tempted to lock them in against such an unhelpful market background. I'm staying with them, though. This is a good well-managed business, immune to oil and metal prices, and totally UK-centric. Surely a safe haven.

Why the drop? Anyone know what's going on here? I thought the trading update was pretty positive and indicated that everything was on target, so why the fall?

NEW ARTICLE: 10 best performers - hold or sell? "Ben Graham, the father of value investing, once warned that "the investor's chief problem - and even his worst enemy - is likely to be himself." Re: Processed pork in sausage rolls carciner... "Greggs is going to get hammered with this news imho" You're not very good at this are you?

wokwok wokwok 26 Oct 2015

Processed meat carcinogenic chemicals. Sheet!!!! Processed meat has been modified to either extend its shelf life or change the taste and the main methods are smoking, curing, or adding salt or preservatives.Simply putting beef through a mincer does not mean the resulting mince is "processed" unless it is modified further.Processed meat includes bacon, sausages, hot dogs, salami, corned beef, beef jerky and ham as well as canned meat and meat-based sauces.Red meat is a darker colour than white meat and includes beef, lamb and pork because of higher levels of proteins that bind to oxygen, haemoglobin and myoglobin in blood and muscle. Why do they cause cancer?Suspected carcinogenic chemicals can form during meat processing. These include N-nitroso compounds and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons.
