Old article worth a read:-[link] the changes in the company, the staff costs, the beer tax, the companies they have bought and the changes after the smoking ban to be more food orientated. Also the family commitment and the view on debt.Games

Re: It's getting there Games,"ya can't time markets, can ya???"Indeed you are right, m8. FSTA seems compelling value at under £10. Costs mainly incurred in £ so Sterling fall not that important. Minimum wage not that important as (I think) most staff are already above the minimum. Sterling fall should suck more foreign punters into Blighty. Where will they go for a pint and a pie?LKH on the flybridge you do the math 3.8% of wad in FSTA happy with that

Re: Beaufort Note From the Times 18th Nov:The Fuller’s Beer Company reported a 5 per cent fall in volumes for the 33 weeks, mainly due to the takeover of Spirit Pub Company, its biggest pub customer, by Greene King. Mr Emeny said it had also avoided “a race to the bottom on pricing”, and strong demand for higher-margin craft beers and ciders meant first-half profits and revenues both grew strongly.

Re: Beaufort Note Sambram,An interesting note. I had previously failed to pick up the fact that Fuller's Beer company lost its largest customer to a takeover by another brewer. This explains the decline in volume over the year.Does anyone know who the lost largest customer was? I can't trace it.LKH on the flybridge

Results ... ... looked perfectly respectable to me. Divi's up by more than inflation. Beer volume down but sales up, presumably mainly because Fuller's is shifting further and further towards food rather than beer.Eminem gave quite a good interview on the Today programme this morning. The only time I said "Say what?" was when he tried to pin a decline in tenanted pub sales on England's lamentable performance in the footy. How does that work? Don't tell me that disappointed fans voiced their displeasure by boycotting Fuller's tenanted houses whereas the quality, who go to Fuller's managed pubs, aren't interested in footy and carried on buying Fuller's ale and pie offerings in larger volumes than before?Whatever. The share price has been weakish of late but I'm happy to hold for the long term.LKH on the flybridge

Re: Off topic -- Victrex "Haven't checked since to see whether I was right or wrong to sell"I know this ain't the Victrex board, but here goes. Bear in mind I've only just started looking this, not committed :-In 10 years it's gone from around £6-7 to £15 but went up to £21 a year ago.Yield is about 3.2%, 1.9X coverOperating margins 39% and ROCE 29.7%It has no debtGrowth has slowed to a few % a year, but it looks like a cash machine.Games -- reading a few articles about composite approaches to see if PEEK is prime or has indeed peaked!!

Re: Off topic -- Victrex Games,Jivens! ... it was more than 10 years ago that I sold the Victrex puppy, though it's reassuring to see that the Hummel bloke who was in charge then is STILL en poste. He must have a lot of stamina! Degussa was the competitor that had me frit. Haven't checked since to see whether I was right or wrong to sell as, once summat is ejected from the wad, I don't tend to go back and inspect the corpse.LKH etc

Re: Off topic -- Victrex Games,"what made you give up on this one?"Blimey, that's going back a bit, m8. I sold Victrex several years ago. From memory I bought it originally because PEEK seemed to be a revolutionary new product with all sorts of exciting new applications and, most important of all, little competition. At one point competition came along, from China and/or Germany I think, and that was the moment when I thought "Enough ... Lancashire won't be able to compete with China" or summat like that. So I sold it.On FSTA, when you value it, be careful to factor in the two classes of shares which are unlisted but carry equal voting rights with the listed category. My attitude is that, at around £10 for the shares that the public can buy, it's perfectly good, though not outstanding, value. I've got 3.1% of my shrunken wad invested here, with which I'm perfectly comfortable but I don't think I'm likely to go higher than that, especially as the spread is pretty large.LKH on the flybridge
