NEW ARTICLE: How FTSE 100 smashed 7,400 and made another record "So, no surprises at the Federal Reserve, which did exactly as the market expected, hiking interest rates by 25 basis points. But what happened to the hawks? Policymakers hint at just two more increases in 2017, fewer than expected. It could even ..."[link]
Tempus is a buy From today's Times.Must admit I'd like it to move forward GLTAMJSCroda International Theres gold in them thar snails. Not from the edible wriggly bits, but from the slime. Take the goo, apply some science and sell it to cosmetics manufacturers as an emollient ingredient. The resultant face cream flies off the shelves in South Korea for $40 a pot.Its that kind of innovation, linked to industrial demand, that has helped Croda, the Yorkshire-based chemicals company, to produce a fabulous growth spurt that pushed it into the FTSE 100 last year. It reported another strong year yesterday. Stripping out the boost from the sterling slide, sales were up 3 per cent to £1.2 billion in 2016, while adjusted profits before tax grew 5 per cent to £288 million. The dividend was lifted 7 per cent to 74p.The group seems to have cracked the art of escaping from its dull, low-margin roots by designing and producing tailored products that manufacturers are prepared to pay top dollar for.Steve Foots, chief executive, argues that rivals are not as good at identifying opportunities or are too big to bother with the kind of niche products that Croda provides. New or patent-protected products accounted for 27 per cent of sales, up 7 per cent. The capital spending cost is considerable, but Croda throws off cash. On top of the ordinary dividend, analysts are predicting another special dividend this year of £150 million, unless it finds acquisitions. After a 5 per cent increase to £35.12 yesterday, the shares trade on 20 times profits and yield 3.3 per cent. Dear, but worth it.MY ADVICE BuyWHY Philosophy of relentless innovation keeps paying off
Finals I like Croda - it seems to be a well run business providing consistent returns no matter what goes on in the world - a good defensive share. On the face of it - the results are very good - sales up 15%, Profit up 13%; but most of the growth is due to favourable foreign exchange. Even without that this has been a solid year for the company, but sales, & profits have had very little growth on the last 4-5 years; and with such small growth, a PE of nearly 22, and a yield of just 2.18% I think there is better value elsewhere.
"In the wake of the EU referendum result, our view of the UK chemicals sector remains relatively upbeat. The companies we cover (Croda, Elementis, Scapa, Synthomer, Victrex, Zotefoams) generally have limited domestic exposure and plenty to gain on transactional and/or translational FX exposure. The main beneficiary of FX is Victrex, where as a rule of thumb, we would expect a 10% sterling devaluation to increase Group PBT by 10%, all else being equal. An isolated period of disruption/ contraction in the UK could therefore be..." Singer note out this morning on research tree
