AGM next Tuesday Carr's AGM is the earliest in the year that I can remember being on 5th January, the day after the Scottish bank holiday. The good news is they probably won't be able to update the meeting on December's trading which given the flooding in Cumbria, the disruption caused by the closure of the Forth Road Bridge and the extremely mild weather may be just as well. Carr's has been treading water now for a couple of years (no pun intended given its Carlisle base) and the company needs to make an acquisition which can revive growth. Positive news on this front could really get the shares motoring despite the rain-laden headwinds that beset the company.

Re: Steady as she goes Farming on all fronts - grain, milk, beef and sheep - is suffering from poormarket prices, so spending by farmers will be minimalized. Carr's will havea job on hand to keep profits sustained, leave alone rising.Carr's evident good management is assuring.ws

Steady as she goes No great surprises with the final results. Borrowings were lower than expected as Carr's continues to generate cash. Another small acquisition in Morpeth adds to the country store network. Slightly disappointing on Aminomax with the indication that it will have a difficult year but this is inevitable with falling commodity prices leading to the cost of alternative feeds falling. A reasonable increase in the final dividend and indications of further progress this year in pre-tax profits so it looks like a hold for now.

Re: drector holdings Chris Holmes, the chair, has something like 1% of the company and Ron Wood, the previous finance bod, had a slightly smaller amount. Bob Heygate, an out-going NED, has around 25%. Ali Wannop has very few. Various descendants of the founding family probably have about 5-10% between them (eg, Ian Carr, the former chair, had 1.1%, and I'd guess Rilla or his children still have them). The executives all have very generous (over-generous, I'd say), share incentives/options, which has a mild but noticeably dilutive effect.

drector holdings Can anyone help I was wanting to see if the directors hold any shares all I can find is Mr Worby buying 25000 shares in Mid April I don't see any other board members with any holdings . Does anyone know if this is the case as I would have liked to have seen some holdings from the board ?

Another new country store Announced on the Carrs Billington website that they will be opening a new country store at Wigton auction mart in September. Every little helps.

Hello EveryoneThinking of making initial small purchase (I am new to CARRS) anyone any thoughts in general re the company ie is it family owned etc

Meanbugger 15 Jul 2015

Trading Statement Overall not a lot of surprises with today's trading statement. Maybe the FD is on holiday but it was surprising not to see a paragraph on the group's financial position. I will therefore guess that due to the costs of the new Chirton factory, slow sales of agricultural machinery, new stores at Selkirk and Rothbury and the Scottish acquisition, net debt is about £32 million now.I've commented previously on silage but it seems that UK dairy farmers generally are becoming more proficient in producing top quality silage which is putting pressure on higher value feed products like feed blocks and Aminomax. As always we are still awaiting the next significant acquisition to get the shares moving ahead.

Re: Acquisition - no RNS? Some more information from a mystery shopper website.Reid & Robertson’s Ballagan Store is located on the outskirts of Alexandria only a few miles from Loch Lomond in the Loch Lomond National Park. The family-run business has two other shops at Ayr market and Oban market but it moved to the new Ballagan premises over three years ago to establish the site as the head office the main distribution point for all their other depots. Reid & Robertson have six field-based sales people all actively calling on the farming community, covering the central and west of Scotland and the border area. Since moving out of town and into their new premises R&R have been able to grow and expand their business. The new location has made it easier for their farmer clients to access the store and has opened up the equine and pet market as well. This has meant they have introduced a new range of products including feed blocks, bagged feeds, supplements and wormers for the equine and large animal markets; a new range of clothing for all customers and a larger range of companion animal products. It looks a natural bolt-on for Carr's existing business. itself it is too small to require an RNS announcement.

Re: Acquisition - no RNS? Carrs doesn't seem keen on RNSs - this isn't the first time they've bought a small company and not made an announcement. Not sure what the rules are but on the up side perhaps they're saving a few quid by not making an announcement.

Re: Acquisition - no RNS? Slightly surprised that there wasn't an RNS on the acquisition of Reid Robertson and that the (price sensitive) news came out through Morning Star etc. Does make you wonder what the company secretary is up to, especially as she's had to recall/correct 3 RNS in the last year.

Re: Results OK results in the circumstances. Numis are forecasting £17.4m PBT and 13.6p of earnings for the current year. Modest acquisitions like those recently in Wales are all well and good but Carr's really needs something more substantial to add to turnover and profits. Hopefully the difficult market conditions for engineering companies supplying the North Sea oil industry will throw up some complementary acquisition opportunities to bolt onto Chirton and Bendalls. It looks a solid hold for the time being.
