Top 10 Stock Picks for 2017 - Q1 update Having reached the end of Q1 2017, it is time to "own up" on YTD performance for the 2017 Top Ten...And it is pleasing (and somewhat surprising) to report that, after a late spurt in the very final throes of the quarter, it is up 3.1% overall... outperforming the FTSE100 by 0.5%, and pretty much bang in line with (very marginally better than) the All-Share Index, having lagged the market indices for very nearly the whole period.Star performer was, of course, the magnificent Card Factory (+13%), crowned by yesterday's delayed - but entirely deserved - post-results rally. In second place, the imperious Imperial Brands delivered a short 10%, followed by each of Sainsbury, ITV and Capita in the top half with returns of 6-7%. Whitbread and Vodafone also did well enough, with a solid, if not spectacular, 4-5% each. Only three "losers"... Stagecoach has lost 3%, and then bringing up the rear are the smaller caps Braemar (-8%) and Bonmarche (-10%) - the latter two being the more consciously speculative selections, whose "value" stories remain intact IMHO, but as yet underappreciated by Mr Market... but I remain hopeful for Q2 and/or the rest of the year! For full disclosure, I continue to (mostly) happily own nine of the 10 stocks, with only Capita still to make it off the "watch and wait" bench.

My Top 10 Stock Picks for 2017 Having perused a few of the usual annual newspaper stock tip lists, I thought I would amuse myself - if no-one else - on a cold day with my own, virtual selection.Same rules as the newspapers typically follow - equal weighted, valid for the whole year with no switching, and full owning-up at year end! Just hope to do better than the papers usually do... Bonmarche Braemar Shipping Servs Capita Card Factory Imperial Brands ITV Sainsbury (J) Stagecoach Vodafone WhitbreadObviously, some of these are more speculative than others. There is a vague attempt at balance and diversification across the list, though it's probably still a bit too exposed to the UK economy - and hence any further Brexit downturn. Probably inevitable, given my usual bias towards 'value' and aversion to buying into momentum.Talking my own book? Of course... would be strange if I wasn't, otherwise I'd have serious questions to ask of my own (real) portfolio. For full disclosure, I own seven of the 10 stocks, with the other three (CARD, WTB, CPI) all under active consideration - to varying extents.

Sold out I've sold out of BON and switched the money into BMS.BON has been my dog of the year, and BMS hasn't been much better. But in my view BMS is better positioned to recover.I just think that Brexit is going to give BON a very hard time, sadly........

info Shares magTime to bag up BonmarcheShares in women’s value fashion retailer look oversoldJames CruxRisk-tolerant investors should bag women’s budget fashion retailer Bonmarche (BON) for its niche appeal and recovery potential at 127.7p. Don’t panic when you see full year results on 10 June as they are unlikely to make good reading given recent disappointing trading guidance and a weak UK retail sales backdrop. Instead, take a contrarian view that all the bad news is fully priced into the stock’s valuation and that management change later this year could trigger renewed interest in the company. Wakefield-headquartered Bonmarche sells clothing for females over the age of 50 through its 312 stores and concessions, website, mail order catalogues and the Ideal World TV shopping channel. It is plugged into the greater affluence of the over-50s female demographic, many of whom have significant disposable income following last year’s pension reforms. Significantly, Bonmarche’s eponymous brand is complemented by the David Emanuel sub-brand and additional sub-brand Ann Harvey, which caters for the 18-to-32 sizes and means the retailer also offers a play on the growing ‘plus-size’ demographic. The shares have crashed following a pair of profit warnings. On 16 December 2015, the £76.5 million cap downgraded annual pre-tax profit estimates to a £10.5 million-to-£12 million range following an unseasonably warm November and December. Forecasts were downgraded again in a fourth quarter update (8 Apr). Bonmarche warned results would come in at the lower end of aforementioned guidance. Over the 13 weeks ended 26 March, like-for-like sales grew 0.5%, an improvement on the third quarter decline, yet still below estimates with continued colder weather crimping demand for spring products. With Beth Butterwick off to join retailer Karen Millen, Helen Connolly is set to take over as CEO and looks a good fit given her expertise in budget women’s apparel. Currently senior buying director for ASDA’s George clothing label, Connolly previously earned her buying spurs in a womenswear sourcing role at Next (NXT) and head of buying at Dorothy Perkins. Cantor Fitzgerald Europe has an 180p price target for Bonmarche. Analyst Freddie George forecasts £10.5 million pre-tax profit and 16.5p earnings per share (EPS) for the year to 31 March 2016. This rises to 18.7p EPS in 2017, meaning the shares currently trade on a mere 6.8 times forecast earnings. The company paid 6.8p dividend per share in 2015. Merely repeating that amount in 2016 implies the shares trade on 5.3% prospective yield, suggesting investors could be paid to wait for the trading recovery. Shares says: "Bonmarche’s rating implies a disastrous slump in trading. We think the market is being too pessimistic, so buy at 127.7p albeit recognising there are no guarantees that sales will recover soon."

Today's RNS Obviously BON took a hit on winter clothing and coats but today's RNS confirms that profit levels are more less on track. It's put a stop on the sp drift at least. In fact most of my stocks have been drifting down since the New Year. Casa.
