Re: Results Have I read it right that the dividend will now be paid in 4 installments rather than twice a year?
Re: Results Only had a quick scan at the results when they came out at 7, but I thought everything looked good & expected a rise this morning, especially after the recent weakness. Always difficult to compare year on year when there is a big take over; but things did look OK.The biggest concern is the level of debt, but we all knew about that at the time of the Reynolds take over, so I can't see that being the drag today. On today's figures, and the price dropping to nearly 4200 the PE in under 14.8 & the (well covered) yield is over 4.6. For such a huge company with wonderful track record, world wide sales, little competition, barriers to new competition, and held is so many top funds, this looks very cheap. Companies of this size, already regarded as safe & good dividend payers do not raise dividends by 15% unless they are sure of future earnings. I'll stick my neck out & hit the blue button.
Re: Results "Can't see too much wrong so far apart from... So the volume decline was less than the market."Yes, a strange one, this - all looks very solid, the commentary upbeat, and the big numbers (underlying earnings, the divi, etc) look fine and dandy. And overall volume declines is hardly new to Big Tobacco - look at the profit, look at the cash flow!Always hard to say exactly where "expectations" were, of course... but could be just that the market currently "hates" Tobacco? Any excuse to trash it....
Re: Big drop today Can really see what's wrong with the results. Gently declining sales surely no surprise. Profits really good. There must be something I'm missing. To me it looks like a strong hold at least.
Results [link] see too much wrong so far apart from :-"""Volume of cigarettes and THPs grew by 3.2%, driven by the acquisition of RAI, and fell on an organic basis by 2.6%, outperforming the market which declined by an estimated 3.5%.""So the volume decline was less than the market.Games
Big drop today Falling fast -- there must be some news here, especially as such a +ve write up in the press.I sold this one at 48XX in July 2017, but it's starting to look tempting again, especially as they have such a strong position in heat not burn products and the Reynolds strength on Vape.Yield is now 4.7%Games
HELPFUL COMMENT IN SUNDAY TIMES Positive piece in today's Business pages with buy recommend.
US Tax This morning's RNS is good news, though strictly not news, more putting numbers to what was already known; but I don't think the market had factored it in. Simplistically it means next year's EPS will be around 6% higher. Currently this is forecast to be 309 - giving a forward PE of 16; this would mean an EPS of 327, giving a forward PE of 15. That should give us a small tick up today.
Trading Statement I actually thought the pre close trading statement was quite positive. Obviously Mr Market thought differently.
Re: Today's Rise Thursday's FT....British American Tobacco climbed 3.7 per cent to £50.28 after Japanese media reported that the government would raise tax rates gradually on tobacco used in heat-not-burn pipes.
Re: Today's Rise That was yesterday's news, so it may explain yesterday's rise, but I'd be surprised if that was the reason for the acceleration today. IMPS were also up quite significantly
Re: Today's Rise I suspect that it might have something to do with the news:British American Tobacco has declared a second interim dividend of 43.6 pence per ordinary share for the year ending 31 Dec.The second interim dividend will be payable on 8 Feb to shareholders registered on either the UK main register or the South Africa branch register on 29 Dec.
Today's Rise No complaints, but why?
