Re: What risk exactly? I concur with your views on BAF i have held this for over 10 years, been a nice little income booster. its had its ups and down really relating to GERON which is the largest holding, with Biotime which holds a number of GERON share second placed, both have been involved in stem cell development, alas Geron put there development on hold while retaining various rights, Gerons shares have always been volatile, the rest of the holding in BAF are income generative and therefore support the income side of the trust, i have never once considered selling and the reason being that the trust has never sold down its holding in Geron or Biotime which to me is a good indicator for a future windfall on the shares, still a weak buy, in my opinion at the current price, but most will have missed the best boarding, but not necessarily the last sailing regards DYOR
High Risk Rated high risk probably because it has 20% invested in Geron Corp, a US biotech company which has a chequered history. You can get more info from the company website via Annual Reports.
Re: What risk exactly? Budu, its deemed to be high risk because of the smaller number of holdings it holds, around 25 I think as opposed to a more normal 80 - 90 ish for other investment trusts. I have seen my capital fall a fair bit since I purchased but I view this holding as an income producer and not one for capital growth. To me, its almost like buying an annuity but with access to some of your capital if needed. The dividend has been increased every year for almost 20 years which I feel is a good track record. Even with my faith in the sustainability of the dividend I understand that this is high risk and therefore only part of my overall portfolio is held here. The key to any investment strategy is diversify, diversify, diversify
What risk exactly? Listed on this site a high risk (which one would expect with such a high yield) but no list of holdings is supplied. Same problem with BAF. Can anyone say exactly what risk is involved please?
