Re: Typhoon deal ....Heorot........but therefore, essentially, a good decision.SAGE

Re: Typhoon deal That's an unusual mix of aircraft types. Typhoon is a pure fighter with some ground attack (GA) capabilities. The F-15QA and the Rafale are primarily GA aircraft. Three completely different aircraft from 3 different countries. Maintenance and support costs will be astronomical.Clearly a political decision.

Typhoon deal In case anyone missed it."DOHA (Reuters) - Qatar’s defence minister has signed a letter of intent to purchase 24 Typhoon jets from British defence group BAE Systems, in a move that could anger other Gulf countries boycotting Doha.Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Egypt and Bahrain cut diplomatic and trade links with Qatar on June 5, suspending air and shipping routes with the world’s biggest exporter of liquefied natural gas, which is home to the region’s biggest U.S. military base.“The letter of intent includes the ministry’s intention to purchase 24 modern Typhoon aircraft with all their equipment,” state news agency QNA reported on Sunday. The agreement was signed by Minister of State for Defence Affairs Khalid bin Mohammed Al Attiyah and his British counterpart Michael Fallon, QNA added.“This will be the first major defence contract with Qatar, one of the UK’s strategic partners,” Britain’s Ministry of Defence said in a statement, adding that talks over a deal had taken several years.“We also hope that this will help enhance security within the region across all Gulf allies.”The Eurofighter Typhoon is a joint project between BAE, France’s Airbus and Italy’s Leonardo, previously known as Finmeccanica, and supports an estimated 40,000 jobs in Britain.Neither statement gave the cost of the combat jet deal. BAE had agreed in 2014 to supply Saudi Arabia with 72 Typhoon jets in a deal worth 4.43 billion pounds.Fallon told a conference in London on Saturday that the British government would step up efforts to help BAE Systems to sell more Typhoon jets with government-to-government deals. The Typhoon has attracted fewer orders this year than the rival Rafale built by France’s Dassault Aviation, which has agreed deals with Egypt and Qatar.Qatar also signed a deal in June to buy F-15 fighter jets from Boeing Co in the United States for $12 billion and concluded a 5 billion euro ($6 billion) deal with Italy for seven navy vessels. The wealthy Gulf state has been accused by its neighbours of supporting terrorism and meddling with Iran, Saudi Arabia’s arch-rival in the region. Qatar denies the accusations. The crisis has put the region on edge and prompted Turkey to send troops to Doha in a sign of support."

Re: Shipyards An upside of having other shipyards tendering, and hopefully building bits, is that it would give our remaining shipyards a boost to enable them to grow post Brexit.now, all the old restrictive practices and fat, complacent management will have been replaced by modern management, eager workforces and high tech design and construction.

Shipyards That was a bit of a blow, but BA.'s just going to have to shape up. Nothing wrong with competition, just as long as BA. don't cut the wrong sort of costs - the cheap road hath no ending. Made that up meself, and proud of it .

Re: F-35 sales No. According to the F35 website, British industry will build 15 percent of each of the more than 3,000 planned F-35s, generating significant export revenue and GDP growth. The program is projected to create and support more than 24,000 jobs across every region of the United Kingdom.

F-35 sales This won't do BA. any harm."Increased sales of the F-35 fighter jet have helped Lockheed Martin, the biggest supplier of defence equipment to the US military, to report better-than-expected profits. The F-35, formerly known as the Joint Strike Fighter, is being built by the US defence giant in partnership with other countries, including the UK.Lockheed Martin reported a 5% rise in second-quarter profits to $942m.The company also raised its sales and profit forecasts for 2017.The company said sales in its aeronautics business, its most important division, were up by almost 20% in the second quarter of the year. The F-35 programme is the US defence department's most expensive, something President Donald Trump singled out last year for criticism. The UK has so far ordered 24 of the jets, the first of which are due to go into service with the RAF and the Royal Navy next year. The short take-off and vertical landing planes, which will be known as the Lightning II, are set to be deployed on the UK's two new Queen Elizabeth class aircraft carriers."

I am out What a great run up in the past two years, happy to bank some bunce. With the weakness in the ££ and the tensions in the middle east, defence stocks could prosper further, good luck. K.C.M.

Re: Trump Not sure just what Trumpie wants to sell to SA, but maybe the recent rise is associated with some participation for BA., or could it be Capital's increasing interest, or both.Whatever, it's nice to see. It's risen by some 40% over the past year - as I'm sure everyone's aware.
