Re: Copper Short / Range Eadwig,"Anyone else fancy a go?"Not me, m8 .... far too complicated for my tiny brain.I restrict mesen to thinking that Cu demand should be reasonably strong over the next few years as electric vehicles gain traction and there's no obvious excessive supply hike in prospect which would drive prices down.Consequently I remain happy to be exposed to one of the companies which produces large amounts of Cu ... albeit a drop in the ocean compared to the far greater amounts of cheap well-located Fe that it produces. Also I do like a nice divi and ANTO is a bit mean on that front.LKH on the flybridge is referring to RIO

Re: Short: +1030.97 - closed 1009.01 Settled for quick 21+ as Copper looks like bouncing & this can move fast against positions. Still 2 shorts open.
ANTO Long @ 1005.01 Substantial long hedge against 2 remaining shorts. Will take out more than one position on any spike up in future. - GLA.
Copper Short I put a copper short on last week using the ETF 3HCS (posted live elsewhere) when Cu was around $3129/lb). I now have a decision to make today concerning the copper price. Talk of trends below is referring to the extremely short term of less than a week ..The Chinese have announced a move to phase out internal combustion in favour of Electric Vehicles, say Bloomberg this morning. No date or targets have yet been set, but as this is the largest E.V. market in the world already, this is bound to have a knock on effect in terms of metals pricing to do with batteries, Copper, Nickel, Manganese, Cobalt and Lithium.Which could mean an end to my Cu short adventure sooner rather than later.I think Cu tends to be pushed up 'overnight' while the Chinese markets are active, and falls have taken place during the UK and US market open hours. With the USD having moved 2 cents weaker against GBP since I bought the position, and it now coming off those 'lows' by ¼¢, I believe I'll give the markets a little time to see if Cu continues its upward trend (currently @$3.050/lb) or declines in UK hours ... . The move upwards hasn't been very strong, despite this news from Bloomberg.Although lacking in detail, the news may well play into the current fashion for E.V. materials in Western markets, causing further rises in Cu. If not and the steep decline trend continues and if the price pass its recent low of $3.035/lb then I think it will carry on to my target of £3.00/lb and even below. Maybe considerably lower. It might be time for Cu to feel out its new, higher, range parameters, which I feel it has moved onto as the FED backs away from interest rate hikes in the USA.Just my theory, it might even turn out to be correct, more likely pure fantasy. The hurricane damage is a real one-two blow to the US economy shorter term. Businesses being disrupted, especially around Houston, Tourism will be badly affected in Florida, less power being used, less oil and gas being refined, output down, unemployment up. Probably $200Bn in expenses on the way, I would guesstimate. That will weaken the US dollar and make it more unlikely for the FED to raise rates going into the end of the year. Possibly one more ¼ point hike before 2018. Maybe, but I think its less than 50% likely now, hence the USD weakness the last few days.Eadwig
Re: Short: 514.99, 549.56, +1030.97 "Did I just see a Cheshire cat or was it Jack ?"========== ========== ========== ========== Hi Damps,I shall certainly sleep much easier this w/end, possibly even easier than a Cheshire cat, but more so from relief than unbridled joy. I still expect to take a hit later. That's not been in much doubt for a while now. I've also never counted my chickens, so I won't start now. However, as commented before, we've noted an increased slowing of momentum for both Cu & ANTO at recent multi-year highs, signalling a possible sharp correction ahead, only timeframe less certain. For now, so it's shaping out.Naturally I'm mindful of others here who I much respect with longs, so let's hope all can come away with no worse than as little damage as possible over time. - All the best!
