Ashtead lead gains Nice move up yesterday. DL's explanation the Exane BNP upgrade. I suspect that other news probably helped. "The US also saw the release of data on housing starts from the Commerce Department which showed a 6.6% increase in April, ahead of estimates for a 3.3% gain. Housing starts had fallen 8.8% in March."Oil price back to $49/bbl should also be positive.I also hold TW, so all in all, not a bad day. H2[link] construction market player, Ashtead, was also building a head of steam on Tuesday. Shares in the plant hire group, which is mainly focused on non-residential construction and industrial equipment in the US and UK, were given an upgrade by analysts at Exane BNP Paribas. Having downgraded to 'neutral' in December, Exane upgraded the stock to an 'outperform' rating following its recent weakness, upping their target price to 1,050p per share from 900p.Analysts said they believed earnings momentum had stabilised and "could potentially inflect"."We see modest upside to FY17 consensus, with scope for the shares to re-couple with the earnings trend."
Re: AHT Broker Update....... Oldjoe1"The bank upped its stance on the stock to 'buy' from 'underperform' and boosted the target price to 1,100p from 800p, pointing to an improved outlook for the company's markets."I wouldn't disagree with the revised target but am curious what new information gave rise to a 37% step increase in target. I can only guess that they attended the recent briefing, looked at the CEO and detected "it's better than you think" body language.H2
AHT Broker Update....... Ashtead jumps on double upgrade from BofA MerrillMon 25 April 2016 10:53 | A A A(ShareCast News) - Equipment rental firm Ashtead got a lift on Monday after a double upgrade from Bank of America Merrill Lynch. The bank upped its stance on the stock to 'buy' from 'underperform' and boosted the target price to 1,100p from 800p, pointing to an improved outlook for the company's markets.Merrill Lynch raised its earnings per share estimates for 2017 and 2018 by 8% and 14%, highlighting improving economic indicators, increased capex expectations and a better outlook for rental yields."We believe that the lead economic indicators in the US are improving with the ISM indices bouncing off lows and the ABI gathering momentum."Furthermore, we sense that excess equipment, both new and used, is subsiding in the supply chain which bodes well for the outlook for rental rates. Currently, utilisation and rates are yet to turn, but early signs are positive."In addition, it said the stock is neutral or positive in the EU referendum debate and is trading at a material discount to historical multiples whilst offering around 20% per annum EPS growth.Merrill said that in the case of Brexit, "lower potential demand in AHT's modest UK business would be more than offset by increases to forecasts driven by sterling". It noted that each 1% FX move is worth around £6m to pre-tax profit in a full year.At 1105 BST, Ashtead shares were up 2.5% to 912.50p.

Re: Sorry to interrupt, but... HSBC downgrade from buy to hold:[link] your own conclusions on the issues they raise. For me, as a long-term investor, Ashtead is still a good solid company with a good future ahead of them, and I intend to keep my money invested where it is. DYOR, and make your own decisions, of course. For me it's a HOLD, but that's just my opinion.
Sorry to interrupt, but... ..coming back to AHT, does anyone know why we have had such a sudden fll in the hareprice today, off as much as 6% at one stage?
Re: Another Bit of Useless Thanks for that.I can tell you tho at the time, people started using it, at first on the same thread I was on, and I made a point of joking they had permission to use the term! ( for the purpose of stocks being hit, which is where it took off from almost immediately and spread to other threads)I'm aware of the other meaningI still think I have a case...
Re: Another Bit of Useless You aren't a nerd for knowing the correct derivation of words. Nerds are those people who don't and get it wrong.
Re: Another Bit of Useless Sorry to disappoint, but the term "tanking" emerged in the 1970s in the world of sport, though its derivation is unclear. It specifically meant losing on purpose, for whatever reason. The earliest use I can trace is in a 1976 interview with Billie Jean King: "When our men don't feel like trying...they 'tank' [give up]. I never tanked a match in my life."My apologies for being such a nerd.
Another Bit of Useless As far as I'm aware, I invented the term 'tanking'.I posted it on a Google Groups forum in 2007, as I was simultaneously talking to my mate and referencing the tanking we got by Arsenal at home in the 5th round of the FA Cup in 2003 when Giggsy missed TWO open goals that day. Silvain Wiltord finished it and that's probably still the loudest any away supporters have ever been at OT.I was referring to 'the tanking in that sector...'Anyway, almost immediately after inventing that term, it spread like widfire across other boards, not just the one I was on. It is now regarded the world over by everyone.I can't find any other reference to it being used before then - unless someone can help me out?...
A Bit of Useless Back in 2008, I was responsible for all web development at Ashtead Technology - then HQ'd at the Warrington A-Plant office, but based in Aberdeen. Now, AHT is just A-Plant (not including Sunbelt, that is based wholly in the US). Ashtead Technology - an offshore rig and sea specialised equipment hirer - was sold off to an oil company in Aberdeen I think. I left the company at that point.I'm not invested in AHT stock currently, but was in 2008 when I first started out building a portfolio. I bought about 8000 shares at 33p, but sold out soon after. DOH!Even at the height of the Global Financial Crisis then, it used to be FUN being in stocks and shares - and actually EXCITING believe it or not. Back then, if your stocks went down a bit, you just waited for em to bounce right back, and sell out of the tripe. eeeeeee, it was easy then. These days, it's HORRIBLE being invested in stocks because although you're sat every single day with an overly-weighted investment waiting for the next piece of shlt to hit the fan, you know that if you don't, you have zero chance of creating enough money to make a real difference to your life, and perhaps, dare I say it, retire early.I'm still waiting and hoping someone will notice the LME copper levels are dropping to near 5-year+ lows, and the onset of a deficit in copper stock levels will finally begin to send the value of my Atalaya Mining shares skyward. Not putting this on the ATYM board anymore because they're probably getting a bit sick of me by now spouting on about why I think they should be currently sat at around £6.00 today. So you lot are having it instead. LOL.I'll plough it all into AHT after that, and then retire! So anyway, anyone from APH from 2008, you know who I am now! May I just say that the people there - especially the management, are still some of the nicest people I've ever met in my life. And Hi!
